My Journey To Wellness

A new year brings about a reason to ruminate about our long term goals. For example, we choose goals to boost productivity, clean up financial debt or lose some weight. As I've aged I am intentionally choosing to focus on total wellness.

My mind and body are not separate although in the past I've treated them that way. For me to be stronger physically, I need to be strong mentally. I've done some deep work to sit in spaces I normally would avoid. Maybe you understand the feeling of an emotion rushing in and instead of understanding it we get BUSY doing something else. We don't want to deal with that annoying emotion.

The only way to healing is allowing hurt, pain, grief to sit with you in stillness. OUCH! It is not easy. But the alternative is me holding onto it. That doesn't work. Those type of emotions (hurt, pain, & grief) come unexpected. They just show up. They never get an invitation but they arrive in our minds. They disrupt our day.

I wanted to share some of my daily rhythms I've discovered on my journey to wellness.

EXERCISE

  • I am active. I use a variety of exercises to stay in shape - yoga, dancing, walking, running, barre, boxing, pilates, etc. Moving to me is magic. When I don't exercise (very rare) I feel stiff and tired. Exercise gives me energy for the day ahead.

MORNING PRAYER & MEDITATION

  • My boys know where to find me in the mornings - on my white couch. I sit in a space of stillness. I put on do not disturb and listen to God. This is when I journal thoughts of gratitude or even frustration. I always arise from my prayer time with God anchored and focused.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

  • For over 20 years I've had a chiropractor part of my wellness journey team. The stress on my spine from travel, exercise and daily movement is evident. Having a chiropractor allows my body to repair internally. For me, it is all about self preservation. It's my therapy.

EATING RAW/HYDRATE

  • No, I'm not one of those. But I do intentionally choose to eat something raw with every meal. Sometimes, it's a simple as cutting up a tomato to eat with my breakfast or lunch. Fresh fruits and veggies are vital for someone on a journey to wellness. I don't do sugary drinks or sodas...I hydrate with water. Lots and lots of water.

SLEEPING

  • I have a non negotiable nighttime routine. No email, no social media at least 2 hours before bed. No eating 3 to 4 hours before bed. No tv or light in my bedroom once it's time to go to sleep. A prayer of thanksgiving, 3-4 deep cleansing breaths and I am asleep within 3 minutes. I know it's hard to believe but it's true. Sometimes I am asleep before my head hits the pillow.
Connecting with others is part of my journey to wellness!

This blog post is not meant to be any type of advice for you. I just wanted to share what I've learned to do on my journey to wellness. Wellness is not a destination but a journey. This new year, I am wishing you well on your own personal journey to total wellness. (posted by Roslyn)
