Top 10 Tips for High School Juniors & Seniors

This summer I spent time with my daughter and Goddaughter. They've both successfully made it through their freshman year of college. During our time together, I asked for their top pieces of advice for high school Juniors and Seniors. Here's what they shared:

  • Continue to build relationships in your Junior year.

They stressed the importance of building relationships with teachers, counselors, and coaches in your Junior year. They will be important in your Senior year when asking for letters of reference and recommendations.

  • Apply for as many scholarships as possible.
There are so many scholarships available. Provide yourself time to apply for as many as possible. Use a calendar system to help remind you of scholarship deadlines.

  • Apply for college early in your Senior year of high school.

Most colleges will open up registration for college admissions the summer before the fall semester begins. Take time to apply early so that you're not stressed by any deadlines.

  • Utilize the Common Application when applying to all of your colleges.

This keeps the process simple and efficient.

  • Take care of yourself and have fun!

  • Don't fill your schedule with difficult classes in your Senior year.

They both talked about filling up their senior year schedules with Advanced Placement (AP) classes. They had late nights and early mornings trying to complete assignments. They missed out on fun activities because they were busy studying.

Most of our kids have worked hard their Freshman - Junior year. Encourage them to take a break from the demanding and tough schedules and instead, enjoy the Senior year journey!

  • Ask for help (early).

If you need help in a class, don't hesitate to ask your parents and/or teachers for help. Everyone wants you to succeed.

  • Attend your Senior year events.

When you graduate, you don't want any regrets. Whether it's a Grad bash, Prom, Homecoming or Graduation, enjoy and celebrate!

  • Earn the best grades that you can during your first semester of your senior year.
  • Cherish your time with your family, even if you plan to stay nearby for college.
Time will fly in your last year of school.

Share these tips with your high schoolers. Remind them that no matter what they face, they can do ALL things through Christ Jesus who gives them strength. (Philippians 4:13)
