A Game of Failure

Almost every Tuesday afternoon you will find me on a baseball field watching my son, Tyler, during his pitching practice.  His pitching instructor, Benny,  is a funny, every day guy who lovingly critiques everything about my son. "Remember your mechanics, Tyler" or "Make the adjustment" are wonderful quotes he always uses when he needs Tyler to focus and pitch the way he has taught him over these past two years.

Last Tuesday, he said something I had never heard him say.  "Tyler, baseball is a game of failure". 

That statement has intrigued me for the past week and I can't seem to get it out of my head.  This week is opening week for MLB (major league baseball).  I am thrilled!  Millions of people will turn on their television or head to a ballpark (like me) to watch and cheer for their favorite team. 

When I asked Benny what he meant by that statement he said, baseball is filled with failure because the majority of the time each batter will strike out.  Only about 30% of the time (if you are a really good batter) will you hit the ball and get on base.  Pitchers will pitch balls outside of the strike zone.  It's a game of failure but millions will watch America's favorite pasttime.

Life, interestingly enough, is the same way.  We will fail!  It will happen to all of us, just keep living.  Those failures should never stop us from trying, dreaming, or believing in our abilities. Many of us have plans of starting a business, pursuing another educational degree or maybe a dream to write a screen play.  Don't let obstacles stop you. Please realize just as sure as you dream or step towards acheiving your goal, you will be faced with a challenge. 

Theodore Roosevelt said, "It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed."

This week be inspired to move towards your goals. Many of us want overnight success but we have to put in the hard work and in due season we will reap a great harvest! Don't get tired!  Press on and allow your failure to fuel your next step.

    Being a softball/baseball player, I always enjoy your anaologies. I remember my mom use to say "Nothing but a try but a failure", or "Failure is not an Option". But you have made me re-think these statements to say, "I will fail, but failure should not keep me from trying again, again......... Julia

Take A Lesson From Ants

I walked into my house and a portion of my floor was covered with little, black ants.  I instantly knew the kids had dropped some sticky substance on the tile floor. That mess attracted what looked like an entire nest of these little, pesky insects.  They were all moving around in unison enjoying what was probably going to be their lunch or dinner. Ironically on Sunday, a dear friend gave me a wonderful scripture about the lesson we can learn from ants.  Really, I thought, how can I possibly learn anything from something that annoys me so much.  I guess you know where I'm going with this.  There is a lesson to learn from ants about efficiency and productivity.   The ants didn't waste any time moving into action to retrieve whatever mess my boys left on the floor.  Not only that, they called all of their "ant" friends to help them in this insurmountable task. I Am Raising America's Most Hated...

BEWARE:  This is not your normal blog post It is not easy raising children.  But raising one of our country's most hated members of society brings more complication into the equation.  Let me clarify for you...raising a black male in America IS scary.  The world easily looks at color on a male as a deterrent to any intellectual ability.  Most men of color are viewed with the ability to only perform one thing - entertainment.  It could be a stand up comedian, singer, runner, actor, football or basketball player. Black males, unfortunately, only see the world through limited lenses.  Other races, ethnicities and gender can view the world with a vast amount of opportunities, but not if you are a black male.  You walk into a room or a packed elevator and people grab their handbags.  You walk next to their car and they lock their doors.  It's the overwhelming amount of negative images that have plagued and are fed into mainstream homes via our tv, social media and newspapers.
