My Top 3 Parenting Scriptures

I love posting about my kids.  I reviewed some previous posts and realized that most of them were about our youngest.  With him being 4 years old, it's easy to write about his adventures.  Well today, I'm writing all about my daughter.  The past seven days have been amazing for her.  She turned 11 this week and it's hard to believe how rapidly time flew.  Even though people always tell you to enjoy each moment because they fly by quickly, time still seems to evaporate when raising kids.

Not only did she turn 11, she also:
  • Finished her track season by reaching personal goals in the long jump & 400 events
  • Completed her 8th year of dance with a beautiful recital performance
  • Promoted to 6th grade (middle school-YIKES!)
The activities of this week allowed me to reflect on her beautiful life.  It hit me that in only seven years, she will be an official adult and leaving the nest.  That means only seven years to pour my filtered wisdom into her.  Seven years to move from managing her life to being her "consultant" as God writes a story in her life.  Seven years until childhood ends and adulthood begins.

God's word will guide my parenting actions.  I won't always get it right but in those moments when I don't, I will let her know mommy made a mistake.  I am fighting for her heart.

  • Proverbs 22:6Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
  • Proverbs 29:15
    Wise discipline imparts wisdom; spoiled adolescents embarrass their parents.
  • Ephesians 6:4
    Fathers, don’t exasperate your children by coming down hard on them. Take them by the hand and lead them in the way of the Master.
Our daughter will be the sum total of her experiences.  Every aspect of our teaching will shape her life.  We are the biggest influence in her life.

    Renee, this post literally brought tears to my eyes when I read it on my phone this morning. I couldn't comment then but what great accomplishments your daughter had this week. The thoughts of having our babies grow up bring a mixture of emotions. (I think about my own daughter). Very appropriate scriptures. Love this post.

Take A Lesson From Ants

I walked into my house and a portion of my floor was covered with little, black ants.  I instantly knew the kids had dropped some sticky substance on the tile floor. That mess attracted what looked like an entire nest of these little, pesky insects.  They were all moving around in unison enjoying what was probably going to be their lunch or dinner. Ironically on Sunday, a dear friend gave me a wonderful scripture about the lesson we can learn from ants.  Really, I thought, how can I possibly learn anything from something that annoys me so much.  I guess you know where I'm going with this.  There is a lesson to learn from ants about efficiency and productivity.   The ants didn't waste any time moving into action to retrieve whatever mess my boys left on the floor.  Not only that, they called all of their "ant" friends to help them in this insurmountable task. I Am Raising America's Most Hated...

BEWARE:  This is not your normal blog post It is not easy raising children.  But raising one of our country's most hated members of society brings more complication into the equation.  Let me clarify for you...raising a black male in America IS scary.  The world easily looks at color on a male as a deterrent to any intellectual ability.  Most men of color are viewed with the ability to only perform one thing - entertainment.  It could be a stand up comedian, singer, runner, actor, football or basketball player. Black males, unfortunately, only see the world through limited lenses.  Other races, ethnicities and gender can view the world with a vast amount of opportunities, but not if you are a black male.  You walk into a room or a packed elevator and people grab their handbags.  You walk next to their car and they lock their doors.  It's the overwhelming amount of negative images that have plagued and are fed into mainstream homes via our tv, social media and newspapers.
